Core Summary
The U-M Life Sciences Institute is home to a world-class cryo-EM laboratory, with state-of-the- art instruments and faculty specializing in this emerging field. Cryo-electron microscopy —cryo-EM for short — is an imaging technology that is revolutionizing biology by allowing scientists to obtain high-resolution pictures of proteins or other macromolecules and using single-particle analysis (SPA) to compute 3D structures from these images. This technique can be used on a wide variety of macromolecules and is especially useful for membrane proteins and protein complexes. Other methods include cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET), which is used to image larger structures like whole cells, and micro-electron diffraction (MicroED), which can be used to determine structures of small molecules. At the LSI cryo-EM lab, our goal is to help researchers from across the university perform the best structural biology possible and leverage the power of cryo-EM.
